TOLCOTT PARSONS ON AMERICAN IDENTITY

The American society, on the one hand, in virtue of its polity, on the other hand, in virtue of the immigration history has become a pioneer in making a multiethnic society up. An ethnic group is always one consisting of members of any age and both sexes, consequently, it’s a transgeneration group type. T. Parsons finds it feasible to decompose the transgeneration tradition into three primeval components. These are common language, which had been inherited by the contemporary members of the community from their predecessors, a sense of common history, an immixture to the common fate. An adjective “fiduciary” has been derived by T. Parsons from the third component of the regarded transgeneration tradition in order to label the American social structure type a “fiduciary association”. There are four cardinal subtypes to a fiduciary association, such as a kinship association, a societal or alike community, a religious association, and an educative cultural association. T. Parsons has speculated about an ethnic group as one belonging to a fiduciary association as a “merger” of community type and kinship type.
